Ex-Dutchmen Take Men’s, Women’s Crowns; Monroe-Woodbury Team Champ
By Jamie Kempton
The homecoming known as the Bill Markiewicz Memorial Rockland Alumni Cross Country Run re-enacted its 33rd annual encore at Bear Mountain on Nov. 28, uniting local harriers spanning more than six decades in an autumn ritual as timeless as the changing of the foliage and shortening of daylight hours.
After last year’s snow-induced course change disrupted the natural rhythms of the tradition-laden event, this year’s drizzly, relatively balmy mid-50s temperatures proved no hindrance whatsoever to the 206 runners who completed the 3-mile trek, which includes a bracing jaunt around Hessian Lake and a steep, mid-race ascent of the famed ski-jump hill.
The race, co-sponsored by the Rockland Road Runners, is named for the former Clarkstown North cross country and track coach (1978-89) who epitomized the sport’s all-for-one/one-for-all spirit. Markiewicz enthusiastically supported everyone who accepted the challenge of running over hill and dale in pursuit of a personal best and the contribution to a team effort.
A pair of Tappan Zee High School alumni conquered that challenge best on a day to revel in retracing the footpaths of their scholastic harrier days. Luke Gavigan, Tappan Zee class of 2015, took control of the race on the ski-slope hill and forged ahead to victory in 15 minutes 52 seconds. The triumph completed a difficult victory double for the ex-Dutchmen ace, after he captured the Turkey Trot 5-Mile at Rockland Lake on Thanksgiving Day. Only Carlos Jamieson, North Rockland class of 2005, had previously accomplished the feat.
Gavigan was a three-time New York State mile champion for the Flying Dutchmen, won Millrose Games and Penn Relays mile crowns, and ranks No. 2 on the all-time Rockland milers’ list at 4:07.82. Currently attending Rockland Community College, he is set to enroll at Penn State in the spring 2016 semester. Runner-up Jake Jibb, Monroe-Woodbury class of 2015, finished 50 yards back in 16:01 after going out hard and leading the first half of the race. Jibb was the 2015 state 3,000-meter steeplechase champion in 8:57.34, third-fastest ever by a New York schoolboy.
Cailé Kohlbrenner, a 2011 Tappan Zee alumna, rolled to her fifth consecutive women’s championship and placed 25th overall, clocking 18:49 to win by 250 yards. Kohlbrenner started clicking off Alumni Run titles the first year she was eligible and has not lost since. She graduated in 2015 from Providence College, a traditional cross country power, and now serves as Assistant Coach/Recruiting at Dominican College in Orangeburg. That coaching position was formerly held by her dad, Andy Kohlbrenner, Pearl River class of 1981, a four-time Alumni runner-up and 2008 Rockland Track & Field Hall of Fame inductee. Finishing second in the Alumni Run women’s division was Meaghan Ventarola, Monroe-Woodbury class of 2012, in 19:38. Ventarola was the one of the top two runners for the St. Thomas Aquinas College women’s team that qualified for, and competed in, the 2015 NCAA Division II national championships, a first in program history.
Monroe-Woodbury of Orange County swept the team titles. The Crusader men won their fifth crown, outdistancing runner-up and nine-time team champ Clarkstown North, 70 to 94. The Crusader women captured their record 12th team title with 36 points, followed by Pearl River with 50. Monroe-Woodbury also claimed team participation honors with 32 runners, ahead of runner-up Clarkstown South (22) and third-place Suffern (21).
Entrants’ ages ranged from 18 to 85. The oldest participant was Pete Beckerle, age 85, Spring Valley class of 1948, who finished the race in 57:22 for 204th place. He was one of seven Beckerle family members to complete the course, including eldest son Larry, Albertus Magnus class of 1973, who holds the distinction of being the only individual to have participated in all 33 editions of the race. Runner-up in the family participation category was the Newsome clan representing Clarkstown South – Dawn, Kim, Jennifer and George.
The Alumni Run was renamed in memory of Markiewicz in 1991 and an annual award was established to recognize those who have rendered distinguished service to the sport. This year’s Bill Markiewicz Award recipient was Jim Glover, Suffern class of 1977, the longtime boys’ cross country and track coach at Monroe-Woodbury, logistics co-coordinator at the Alumni Run, and meet director of the recent New York State scholastic cross country championships at his host school. The award was presented to Glover by Janet Markiewicz, Bill’s widow, who was joined at the event by several Markiewicz family members, including three who participated in the run.
Past Alumni Run champions who participated this year include Nick Roosa, Tappan Zee class of 2003, a two-time winner who placed sixth in 16:49; Brian Crowley, Albertus Magnus class of 1982, 12th in 17:24 (at age 51); Kristin Schiesswohl White, Monroe-Woodbury class of 1989, fourth in the women’s division in 20:26; and eight-time champion Julianne Littmann Viscardo, Monroe-Woodbury class of 1995, 11th in 22:16.
Besides Gavigan, other former Rockland County scholastic meet titleholders who took part were Jim Dinan, Nanuet class of 1987, and Brendan Fennell, Pearl River class of 2003, a three-time County meet champ and two-time state titlist who was voted Male Runner of the Decade for Rockland from 2000-2009.

RRR Members and Women’s Distance Festival Race Directors, Mike Seidenfrau and Carissa Coslit (Soon to be Seidenfrau!), were featured in this months issue of New City Neighbors.
Michael Seidenfrau is one of those people who has distinct “before” and “after” parts to his life – intersected directly by a serious and life-changing accident. Michael calls it a “rebirth.” He says, “Not only did I come back faster and stronger physically, I became a better person,” and, to that end, one who is truly generous to our community.

RRR Member Gary Scarano has coordinated with the AMC for a two day, two night WEEKEND stay for Trail Runners and Hikers at the brand new Harriman facility. He will be holding up to 2 cabins in groups of 16 bunk beds each, but if all 16 people stay in one cabin, the cost is only $36-$40 for both nights!! July 15-17th, Friday to Sunday. Please forward this to your running & hiking friends.
The plan is to coordinate events with both Runners & Hikers Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Friday will be a welcome, Saturday will be various runs and hikes hosted by experienced people (if you are experienced and want to lead a run or hike, please let me know). there may be a special event on Saturday night (e.g. if allowed a bon fire), or other things (Share our best running / hiking stories?). Of course the runs will be host by different pace people and different distances / paces. Here are some initial suggestions:
* About a ~20-mile run to Bear Mountain and Back
* About a ~12-mile run to Claudius Smith’s Den, an outlaw during the revolutionary war that used this area for buried treasure!
* A ~8-mile Hike/Run to Lake Welsh for a swim and a snack
* A 4-mile Hike/Run to the fire tower for one of the best views around (watch out for killer bees, no joke)
* A 2-mile Hike to the crash site of the Baltimore Colts 727 plane
This is the first time the Appalachian Mountain Club has opened overnight cabins in New York on the Appalachian Trail. It will be a fantastic and fun get away.
If you are interested, please contact Gary Scarano at gary@reachoutcom.com.
AMC is offering a shuttle to the Harriman Outdoor Center with pick-ups at the Tuxedo Park Station (7 miles from the camp). This will allow commuters from NY City direct access to Harriman Outdoor Center. For those traveling by car, there will be a parking lot located just below the Main check-in Lodge. If you need a ride from the Suffern Train station, let me know, we can arrange a pick up.
Food Pricing
Breakfast $11.00 (per meal)
Dinner $23.00 (per meal) (Total $32 a day)
Since there will be events during the day, it is not recommend to purchase lunch, which is a simple deli set up for $11.50, but that is up to you. There will be grills and limited refrigerator space for people that want to bring their own stuff. All meals will need to be paid for in advance, so first, please confirm that you are coming, and then you can pay for your stay and weekend in advance. Full payment is due to AMC by May 1.

On Sunday, April 17, 2016 we had great attendance for the 27th Annual Hook Mountain Half Marathon and 5K run & 7th Annual Walk to Remember. This day will probably always be remembered! We had 618 registered runners and over 500 walkers breaking the race record. We also were very lucky that the weather was perfect for the runners. We had 20 participants in the Children’s Run, they all received medals.
Nicholas Roosa of Manhattan, New York won the half marathon, with a commanding lead, in a time of 1:15:54 and Patrick Wortner of Dobbs Ferry, New York won the 5 K in 16:07. Courtney Snyder of Oradel, New Jersey led the women in a time of 1:35:49 in the half marathon and Jordan Johnson of Katonah; New York led the women in the 5K in 19:56.
John Altieri of Nyack received the Adi Steingraber award as the first Rockland finisher, in a time of 1:27:55. Great job John!
Ayako Yamazaki of Nyack received the award for the first women Rockland finisher in a time of 1:39:02. Congratulations Ayako!
We always try to make this race about the runners and this year was no exception. After enduring a crazy winter, our runners not only showed up, but ran and walked like they had been training all year. We had many first time runners conquer ‘the Hook’ (can you ever conquer the Hook?) and we’re very proud of the many kind after-race thanks we received.
All told running we had 312 women and 306 men finish the races.
We had some great sponsors and plenty of food and refreshments.
We would especially like to thank the volunteers from United Hospice of Rockland and the Rockland Road Runners for making the race an annual success. We have raised over $60,000 for the United Hospice of Rockland, we are sure that George would be very proud. The “Walk to Remember” was very inspirational and brought many more participants both running and walking!
Team In Our Hearts raised the most money; over $3,200 and won the prestigious Avanti Cup!
Those individuals who are always there when you need them: Ken Kinsley our volunteer coordinator, Marie, Bernie, Enilda, Becky, Bernie, Kathy, Marie, Ellen, Dan, Amy, all the Volunteers from Hospice, Youth for Hospice, students from around the county, Nyack High School Chorus for a wonderful version of our National Athem and Rockland Road Runner volunteers. Ken did a super job with the volunteers and the overall race coordination! MJ did a terrific job with the Walk to Remember.
Our lead sponsors were All Bright Electric, AvantiScripts, Dr. Edward & Raselle Fisher, Stop and Shop of New City, BH&G Rand Reality, PDI, Inc., AMA Labratories and Rosemarie & Mark Glassel.
We wanted to share a very personal victory from one of our many runners. This particular runner came in last:
“Dear RRR,
Thanks for the picture, and to those who waited for me. I really appreciate it. Great race, well done.
I just want to share my story: I have been a cardiac patient since birth. Growing up, I was very restricted in what I could and could not do, physically. I was told I would have a lot of limitations in life, if I survived past my 21st birthday. Fast forward: a successful career, marriage, two children, three marathons, several 5k and 10k races, and now, a half marathon later, I have learned how important is to never give up, no matter the challenge. I’m glad you made that possible for me, yesterday. Thank you.
I have now officially retired from long distance running. The half marathon was the last of my bucket list runs. I will keep my runs short and sweet, from now on.
All the best to the RRR and thanks for what you do for all the runners out there, each with their own story.
Regards,”
That sums up why we do these events, for all the stories out there.
Thank you to everyone for making this event a most memorable experience. And see you next year…
Steve Borton & Rich Tinger

Race Report by Jamie Kempton
There were only 52 total finishers, quite a bit lower than previous years.
Voytek was the top finisher for RRR, placing fourth overall. Mary Pat Wolff was our top female.
Patrick McCarthy of Westchester TC won for the sixth time in nine years, completing the difficult course in 18:49. Suzanne LaBurt of Taconic RR took the women’s crown and finished sixth overall.
Taconic RR swept the team categories. There was one combined women’s division since there were not enough women to divide it into 40+, 50+ and 60+.
Team scores:
Men’s 40+ (5 scorers): 1. Taconic RR, 31; 2. Westchester TC, 37; 3. RRR, 100
Women’s combined: 1. Taconic RR, 71; 2. RRR, 145. (Westchester TC, insufficient scorers)
Men’s 50+: 1. Taconic RR, 17; 2. Westchester TC, 31; 3. RRR, 58
Men’s 60+: 1. Taconic RR, 56; 2. Westchester TC, 107. (RRR, insufficient scorers)

The 6 week track program welcomed over 200 participants who trained hard, and got better and stronger each and every week. Our culminating event, the 2 Mile Fun Run/Walk, treated over 125 kids to a real race experience, complete with bibs, a water stop, a firetruck, a DJ, a scored finish line, medals, an ice cream truck, and bananas and bagels at the finish. The kids ran with over 25 amazing role model “buddy runners” who were RRR members and TZ High School track team members, and their Coach. Many kids even had the special opportunity to run with their parents too. It was such a gift to see each and every one of those smiling faces cross that finish line. For many of these kids, this was their first race, and we are hopeful it will not be their last. Hopefully, this experience will help serve as a great foundation for many other things they do in their lives. Running is a metaphor for life. We would like to take this time to thank each and every one of you for supporting the RRR Kids. We thank our sponsors Kumon, Shop Rite, Stop & Shop, Tumble-bee Gymnastics, and In-home LCSW. We would like to thank our DJ, Rich from Mix Entertainment Company, our ice cream truck from Rosie’s Soft Serve, and our photographer Erika of Erikajon Photography. We would like to give a special shout out to Senator David Carlucci for coming out and speaking to our runners at the start of the race, and to the Rockland Lake Fire Department for coming out and encouraging the kids at the 1 mile turnaround with their shiny firetruck. We have an amazing team at the RRR Kids Program and we are beyond grateful for them. We are eternally grateful to each and every volunteer at the track program and at the race. One of the things we taught the kids at the track program is that runners always encourage each other. Our RRR Members proved that as they came out in droves at the race. None of this could happen without our volunteers. Most importantly we want to thank the parents and the runner participants. We appreciate the parents for encouraging their kids and supporting them in all that they do. We are so proud of each and every child who came out on Thursday nights to sweat with us at the track, and who ran their hearts out at the race. We are already planning and looking forward to next year!

We had another great year with apx. 40 runners regularly attending every Wednesday at the Pearl River High School track for the 18-week program. Runners trained to increase speed and strength, boost confidence at faster training paces and generally sharpen one’s fitness level.
Coaches Jamie Kempton and Jesse Hackell oversaw the workouts and helped runners of all abilities reach their racing and training goals. The training consisted mainly of interval/repetition workouts ranging in distance from 200 meters to 2,400 meters and two off site hill workouts at Bear Mountain and Rockland Lake.
We had a warm, humid, dry summer with almost no threat of rain for the entire 18 weeks! We took over the track and burned it up through the long summer days. The hard work paid off when we finished and celebrated another satisfying season with a full blown party hosted by VT with food and drinks provided by the club. This years party was celebrated one week early after a crushing 10 x 400m workout. We were exhausted but we had a great, late night celebrating our summer of hard work!
We would like to thank everyone who took part in the Summer Track workouts this year and we extend an open invitation for all runners of all abilities to lace up those running shoes and join us for another fun-filled season in 2017!
Unofficial group workouts will continue through the winter at Pearl River High School Track, 7:00pm on Tuesday (intervals) and Thursday (tempo).
